CD-ROM Drive Code 42

Bill

Could somebody explain to me how XP can "find and install"
a driver for my CD-ROM and then get a Code 42 (cannot find
device) in the hardware manager? I have replaced the CD
with THREE other CD Drives all with the same complaint.
There is a HD on the same IDE controller that works just
fine. The CD is (and always has been) the Master and the
HD the slave. This happened immediately after I installed
SP2 on this machine. I don't want to migrate SP2 to other
machines if this is going to happen to every one of them.
Any advice?

I probably should have mentioned that this is occurring
on my Secondary IDe controller, so Master/Slave shouldn't
be a problem - BUT I reversed them anyway. I went to the
Registry key and found only the UpperLimit value and
deleted it. I am sondering how this happened just one
day from the next with NO installation of software at
all! This is just a plain-jane read-only CD drive that
has been working for two years until three days ago. I
wonder how those keys got in the registry.

Thanks for the help, Bobby
