cd-rom & cd-rw drives won't install

When I upgraded to XP home from 98 the drives were
recognized. After automatic updates, cd-rw would
disappear. I was able to reinstall through control
panel. Now both drives are gone. They are on the list
of hardware that has not been installed, but when I try
to install them from control panel, I get the message
that the drivers are missing or corrupted (code 39).
These are plug & play devices and should install without
a problem.

Anyone know of a solution?

Thanx.

Get the drivers from the manufactures website and install them that way.

Had a similar problem with USB devices that should also be plug and play but
wern't. Do the drivers think the drives are working Ok? (eg Fire up the
Device Manager, right click the CD drive and select properties. Under
"device status", does it say the device is working OK?). If not I would
reinstall the drivers.

I've tried doing that, but since they are plug & play,
there are no drivers.
