CD-ROM causing crashes?

I cannot boot into windows after updating the firmware on my DVD-RW. It
cannot boot into safe mode or any other configuration. It does not matter if
the drive is removed, or if a different CD-ROM is put in its place. I also
cannot enter into setup. I used the 6 floppy disks to boot into the setup,
but once it goes into the graphical interface from the XP CD, it gives me a
blue screen of death. the errormessage is: STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error
C:\SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll

When not going into setup, and booting up normally, the blue screen flashes,
so I cannot determine what it says. On Safe mode it just hangs after loading
the CD-ROM drivers.

I'm really at a loss as to why It did tis, it was working just fine not 10
minutes before. I have tried re-flashing the MB BIOS.

P4P800-vm
Intel Celeron 2GHz
1GB Corsair RAM
Seagate 60GB HDD
WD 5400 20GB HDD
LG 16x DVD+-RW
eVGA FX5500 AGP

Thanks.

Does Windows still start in Safe Mode? See "A Description of the Safe
Boot Mode Options in Windows XP"
Also try this: "How to Start System Restore Tool From a Command Prompt
in Windows XP" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=304449) for to
reset your settings.
And read ""STOP: C0000221 unknown hard error" or "STOP: C0000221
STATUS_IMAGE_CHECKSUM_MISMATCH" error message occurs"

The computer will not start in safe mode (any of them, including command
prompt). It hangs.
Booting into plain Safe Mode hangs after loading the graphics AGP440 file (I
believe it is hanging on CD-ROM load)
Booting into Safe Mode with Networking hangs isapnp.sys. it tells me that
this file is corrupt.
Booting into Safe Mode with Command Prompt hangs after WMILIB.SYS; ACPI.SYS
seems to load okay.

I do have the same problems as Q314474. I cannot load setup though, as it
gives me the message "STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error
C:\SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll "

I will try to load windows onto a seperate HDD and copy over the files from
one to the other. This is a last resort, though, and kind of a pain. Let me
know if you think of anything else.

thanks for the help thus far.

No, I do not have another idea. I think this is caused by some
hardware damage, where a defective HDD is one of the possibilities.
