When you insert a CD ROM XP takes time to search it, decided what to do, and
when it cannot figure it out, it asks you what to do. Since I only use data
CD roms, this is a hassle slowing things down with no bennefit, and I don't
see how to turn it off. How do you turn it off for all CDs or Data CDs?

I am not trying to turn of autostart, like a programs installation CD rom
would have on it.

Please advise.

Go to My Computer, right-click on the CD Drive and choose Properties. There, choose the autoplay tab and and you can select what actions Windows takes when you insert different types of CDs.
