CD ROM and DVD won't read into computer

P4 processor with OS of XP Professional
Put CD into DVD read/write drive, id's as CD, install DVD
into DVD read/write drive, id's as DVD but neither DVD
read/write or CD drives can read into computer, ie, can't
read discs. I can install CD into CD ROM drive, install
blank CD into DVD writer and copy from CD just perfectly
using Nero software so I know the drives themselves are
working just fine, it's like the drivers from windows XP
arn't working correctly. When I check properties of
either drive, it always comes back with 0 bites of
information so computer is somehow not able to read from
either drive. Any help would be appreciated!
