Yes - Googling is fun - but as you have observed very often the result is
information overload. In such circumstances far better to ask for
recommendations from the friendly folk on here don't you think? (That's a
rhetorical question by the way, no need to comment unless you feel you have
to). Thanks for your suggestion though.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Currently I am trying out
dBpowerAMP Music Converter which seems to do everything I want but I will be
looking at all the other suggestions too. Incidentally I had previously
tried dBpowerAMP Music Converter but the newer version has a 30 day limit on
MP3 conversion. Presumably one would have to hand over some cash to use it
after that. This earlier version (10.1) has no such restriction.
