I have a cd-r of files that was burned using windows 98.
When I put it in my win xp computer it sees it as an
empty cd-r and treats it as if it can be written to. I
would really like to get the files on that cd onto my xp
computer. How do I get it to read the cd? thank you.

Hi,

I'm betting that the disk was created by packet writing software, and
WinXP's ability read the UDF format is very limited. You may need to install
the same software (or a compatible version of it) that was used to create
the disk under WinXP in order to read it.

Using what software?

If it was using packet writing - eg InCD or Direct CD it may be in a
version that XP cannot rad natively, and you will want a reader program
from the makes of he software - EasyWrite Reader from www.nero.com or
udfreader from www.adaptec.com or www.roxio.com

If it was burned with the related 'mastering' programs it may be a
matter of hardware compatibility: getting reader, media and burner all
matched up can be troublesome. Try burning with a different brand of
disk
