I purchased a computer system and a windows xp home
edition (original) cd accompanied it. I have since sold
the computer, but forgot to remove the sticker with the cd
product key. How do I go about recovering the cd key?

You don't.
The Product Key is not on the CD at all.

Also, since the Product Key was a sticker on the computer, that
indicates that Windows XP is OEM.
OEM is normally permanently bound to the first computer installed
regardless the condition or situation of the original computer.
You sold Windows XP with the computer.
It is not relevant that you still have the CD.
Read the EULA for details.

Greetings --

You don't.

If the Product Key sticker was affixed to the PC, that means that
the PC had an OEM installation of WinXP. An OEM license, once
installed, cannot be transferred to any other computer, under any
circumstances. In effect, you sold that WinXP license when you sold
the computer. If the PC's purchaser was expecting to get the WinXP OS
along with the PC, as is required with an OEM license, and you failed
to give him the installation media, you have committed fraud. Trying
to reuse that WinXP OEM CD to install the OS on another computer will
add software piracy to your actions.
