cd emulation in xp

i have an older game whereby it plays mostly from the cd.

i recently downloaded a patch which entered a line in the sys.ini to emulate
a cd drive to access the patch data from my computer.

in windows xp help, it said this entry into sys.ini would no longer bring
the desired result.

can you tell me what would work?
