CD\DVD writer problem

M

Mike Lane

I've got a Dell Latitude laptop. I was viewing a movie through the CD player
and then wanted to burn some files onto CD. I tried to open the Roxio
burning program that came with the computer but could not. So I rebooted the
computer and although Roxio opened, the computer cannot recognise the CD
now. In Device Manager, there is a yellow ! by the name of the device (an
NEC ND5100 USB device). If I then look in properties, I get this message
"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot
find the hardware device. (Code 41)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

I can't find the drivers anywhere and Dell say that I need to reinstall XP
which seems rather drastic. I even copied the drivers from another laptop
but the problem persists. I should add that I tried the other laptop in my
base station which has the CD drive installed and there was no problem, so
the issue is with my computer, not the hardware.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Mike,

See if this helps:

Save the file below to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and
double click the file. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is
done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect.

If not, do some reading here and good luck!

WOW. Kelly, it worked after the reboot. This problem foxed Dell and our
computer people. I am in awe of you.

How does the patch work?

Have a great holiday break

Thanks for kind words, Mike and glad to hear all is well. This is a "very"
old XP issue and Dell Support, etc really needs to get with the program.
)
