CD/DVD-ROM problems with AOL and iTunes

I have an Acer notebook, which I bought brand-new with Vista already
installed back in March. Whenever I install AOL and/or iTunes, my CD/DVD-ROM
drive stops working. I have disabled/enabled the drive, I have
uninstalled/reinstalled the drive, and there are no new updates for the
drive. I uninstalled both AOL and iTunes, and the drive worked again. I
have no other problems with Vista, and I really would like to at least have
iTunes. I have tried each new version of iTunes, but all of them "turn off"
the drive. Oddly enough, both AOL and iTunes work fine (installation for
both is successful every time), but, of course, iTunes is not complete
without a working CD drive. I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions. Most of
the people I've asked for help suggest that I just wait around for a patch or
update or more compatible version, but I'm starting to doubt that there ever
will be one. Thanks.

Sam,

A quick google search reveals that iTunes has had Vista compatibility issues
from the inception. Consequently, Apple has been releasing updates regularly
to address these issues, but some problems still remain outstanding. For
example, see the following website:

I have no way of knowing whether your issue is the norm for what has been a
continuing problem for iTunes, or whether you have a unique issue. If your
problem is a typical situation, then eventually Apple will fix it with a new
version of iTunes. I simply don't know. Apparently AOL has similar
problems, and all we can do is wait for these vendors to fix their problems.
Others may have more specific information.
