Hi,

The CD/DVD does not work. They are also missing from the Device Manager.
Everything seems to have disappeared, completely.

Also, the Wireless Lan card is no longer recognised - it sees it as new
hardware but looks for PCMCIA MTD-0002.

I have a Sony Vaio running XP Professional SP2. I've tried a few options
found in Google but no luck.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

What changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?
What have you done to troubleshoot already? What antivirus software do
you use? Let's see if we can narrow this down a bit - you've basically
told us "it's broken" and not much else.

I've repaired the CD/DVD simply by removing it and rebooting.

With regards to the Wireless LAN card, the only thing that changed was I
used someone elses usb conection to access broadband at another location.
When I returned home wireless would no longer work and Wireless conection no
longer appears in Network Connections. I reinserted the card and it detects
new hardware, but as MTD-0002 and then cant find the driver even when the
product cd is in. I've tried moving the drivers into a temp folder in
explore but basically the fault seems to be with the card not being
recognised in the first place. I think.

I use AVG free edition, Zone Alarm, and reguarly use Spybot.

I'm not sure why using a different connection would throw your machine
into a tailspin like that. In Device Manager, enable showing hidden
devices (with the card out). If the wireless card shows up,
delete/uninstall all instances of it and then reboot with the card in
to see if it is properly recognized now.

Thanks but unfortunately the card was not recognised in the device manager,
even after hidden items.

Then perhaps the card is broken. Try it in a friend's laptop and see if
it gets recognized there. If it does, then you know you may have
hardware problems on your laptop and should call the mftr. for tech
support.

Good luck,

Malke
