CD/DVD drive problem. Please help.

Ok I have a new DVD-+RW drive I installed. It is a Plextor drive and I can
see it in the bios at boot as well in windows. I can install games/software
from the drive without problems. My problem is that when the programs look
for the cd/dvd during startup windows acts like there is no drive. It is
always there but NONE of the programs when starting will see it. I have
reinstalled some to see if that was the problem and gone in the reg and
changed target drive for others and nothing. I am looking for any ideas what
to do. I have XP SP2.

You might try updating your bunning software and or see if there is a
firmware update for your drive on it's OEM's web site.

The problem is not with any burning software taht I can tell. I do not have
any software on this computer. One of the first things I did was update the
firmware for the drive. I have done everything short of a reinstall of
windows to get this to work but I know I don't know all the tricks of
windows. If I can give more information I will just ask and tell me what to
show. The drive always is shown in wondows and it will auto run cd's and
games so I know it is working. Windows says the device is installed and
working proper with no issues but when a game starts up and it looks for the
cd to validate I get insert the cd errors. I don't think that this is an
issue with the game software because I have tried 5 different games all
different publishers. Please give me some ideas this problem is eluding me.

Ok, when installing a new drive you follow the instructions and that usually
means installing software that came with the drive ie the burning software
and it's drivers.


One of the first things I did was update the

firmware for the drive.

Firmware updating is not normally a part of the installation process. The
firmware is not the same as drivers, it is more like a bios upgrade. The
firmware chip is in the drive and if you flash in the wrong or hacked
firmware it can destroy the drive and void the OEM warranty.

You don't reinstall Windows you reinstall the drive if needed or just let
windows install it. In device manager find the new drive and right click to
uninstall, then click on scan for new hardware, Windows should find and
install the device. If you have an install disk for the drive just tell
windows were to find it. The burning software contains drivers for the drive
and can affect it's performance too.

If I can give more information I will just ask and tell me what to

show.

Run the Nero info-tool save to a file copy/paste and post your results.
