cd/dvd burner problems

For the past few months, my dvd burner will not completely burn cds or dvds.
It burns partially (maybe 4 songs out of 20) and partially burns dvd home
video etc... to disk too. Then I get an error message saying burn failed.
I have tried this with several different software programs and get the same
result. Before I reformat the hard drive, or take the computer to a shop, I
wondered if anyone has encountered this before and do you think it is a
software problem, or has my burner failed? I have an HP Media Center 873n.
Thanks for any insight.

Karen,

This sounds like a software problem to me. I would uninstall the burning
software you are using and try reinstalling it. There is a remote chance
that you could have a virus, worm, adware or other infection. Run scans and
delete any nasty stuff found.

Kevin,
I run spybot and adware and avg virus checker very often, so I do not think
it is a worm or such. I have uninstalled burning software and reinstalled
and nothing seems to help. That's why I am considering just reformatting.
After that, if it still does not work, I would assume it is hardware.
Anyhow, everything seems fine and there are no error messages etc... until
the burn fails. Thanks for the help. I will keep trying.
