cd drives not recog. after reformat

I posted this note a few weeks ago but got no response
(doesn't Microsoft monitor this?). I have seen many other
posts about CD problems, with very few responses. Here it
is:

I had to reformat my hard drive a few months ago. After
reinstalling Windows 2K and all software, I started having
problems with windows recognizing CD-RW drive. Windows
does not see it, does not find it when you use the
Hardware Wizard, etc. It is like it is not even
connected. In fact, it will not even open if you push the
button on it. However, all cables appear to be ok.

I have also had trouble with the DVD drive. It is often
not recognized. However, sometimes I can get Windows to
recognize it if I use the Hardware Wizard. Any help is
appreciated.

Is Roxio's EZ CD Creator installed, or was it installed and then
uninstalled? If so, that's the problem. Try this, even though the
tech note is for WinXP it also applies for Win2K:

A couple of points to clarify here. I actually have the
identical problem on two identical machines. I installed
a new hard drive on one and reformatted the other. Both
machines had ez CD Creator installed before the changes.
However, isn't the registry recreated when Windows is
installed (new install not repair)? So why would this be
a problem? Also, the device manager doesn't even see the
disc drives, much less report driver issues with them.

I have read the article you mention and tried it on one
machine. No change. Help!

You said you had reinstalled Win2K "and all software", which
implies you had also reinstalled EZCDC.

Yes, Win2K registries are recreated from scratch if you don't do
an in-place upgrade or repair.

Did you reboot after making the registry edits? What version of
EZ-CDC are you running? If v4, try this:

For version 4.02c:

1) Search for and delete the files Cdralw2k.sys and Cdr4_2k.sys in \winnt\system32\drivers\

2) remove the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdralw2k

3) remove the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2k

4) remove the registry value
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\LowerFilter
5) remove the registry value
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\UpperFilter

(Steps 4&5 you've already done.)

For ver 4.0:

1) remove the file Cdr4vsd.sys in \winnt\system32\driver\.
2) remove the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4vsd

Be sure to reboot after making these changes.

Not sure what else to recommend, other than to check the drive
jumpers, cable, and make sure it's connected to the proper port
on the motherboard (some have both raid and standard IDE).
Also check your system bios settings for the IDE channels.

The jumpers, cable, and motherboard were not changed from
before, so they don't seem likely to be the problem. I
will go through these ideas again. Thanks for your help.
