CD drivers appear to be corrupt - same error with new drivers

I have been working on an XP home computer that no longer
has a working CD driver. It is not mine, so I'm not sure
what broke it. When you go into the device manager, the
CD reader has an exclamation point. I've tried to
reinstall/update the driver, as well as uninstall the
device and rediscover the device, but nothing works. I
also pulled the cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys, and
storprop.dll from a machine with a working CD reader.
Still, I still see the exclamation point in the device
manager. Under the System Event Viewer, there is an error
from the Service Control Manager (Event ID 7026) that
states the following: "The following boot-start or system-
start driver(s) failed to load: redbook."

Any ideas of what I might try? Thank you. Allyn

Try this Microsoft document Q314060 to edit the windows
registry, it worked for me
