I insert a cd " microsoft greetings workshop " and the
drive reads and opens this file . I insert a cd-r with
files on the cd and the computer does not read this cd.
What is the problem?

Some older CD drives will not read CDr's at all. Some very fast speed
newer drives have trouble with them, too. To compound the issue further,
the speed at which the CDr was burned can have the same effect in some
otherwise good CD drives. If you are the one who burned the CDr try
burning another but at a slower speed. The CD drive may also be defective.

Commercial CDs are usually of good quality. CDRs and CDRWs in general have
a lower reflectivity level and they come in various qualities. If there are
smudges on the CDR, clean the disk. If the drive has read CDRs of this
brand before without a problem, try cleaning the drive. Sometimes just
wiping out the tray with a soft cloth is enough but may need to use one of
those cleaning kits too.

Another possible - if the CDR was burned on another machine with a
different burning program, the disk may not have been closed so as to be
readable on most any other computer. Take the disk back to that computer.
Close the disk and then try it in the drive on the other computer again.

Another variable is the CD-R/CD-RW software that was used to format and
write to the disk. A friend's Dell system came with Easy CD. Easy CD had
an option to write to the CD so that I could be read by any system. I
selected that option, IT WORKED. I have yet to find a Windows XP OR Windows
98 system that can't read a CD made using that method.
