CD drive

I have tried to install an external DVD-RW however each time this happens
the CD drive icon is removed from My Computer. Is it possible to have both
drives operating, if so how can this be done without me roasting my pc.
Please be gentle I have no IT sense.

what kind of external drive? how do you connect it to the computer? USB?
firewire? IDE? optic?

what kind of windows? xp?

yes it can easily use multiple drives. what you may also check is under
Settings, then control panel and system and look in hardware settings or
device manager. Control Panel is used a lot for setting up your system when
things need to be changed.

it will probably have a yellow or red indicator on the device showing some
conflict. When this kind of thing happens? uninstall software relating to
the thing. may have to reboot each time. uninstall the DVD software
completely and make sure the device manager is happy.

Then add the external DVD driver software first, then after thats fully
done, connect the device
