cd drive won't open or play

On Toshiba 1625 CDT running XP Pro, cd drawer won't open and if opened
manually, shows no content in Windows Explorer with disk inserted.
Device Manager shows device working properly.

Sounds like the drive has failed. Device Manager does not show all
functions, particularly not the state of drive optics.

The device manager is rather clueless. All this really means is that the
electronics are working fine.
My opinion is that the device is broken and needs replacement. Alas,
Toshiba may be the only source.

Try a different drive.
