CD Drive will not read cds

Have a Dell Lattitude running Win2Kpro and after putting
CD drive back into notebook I'm unable to read cds.
(verified cds as fine) Drive spins and acts as if it is
reading but indicates CD in drive needs to be formated.
Doesn't matter as to the type of CD ... tried audios,
data, etc.

Software or hardware problem?

Since you say "after putting CD drive back",
I'm assuming that it's removable, and you had it out.

If so, check the connector on the "back" of it, where
it mates with the connector in the laptop's drive bay,
and check the connector on the drive bay itself
(not gonna be easy to do, as it's at the end of a tunnel.).

Use a strong light and a magnifying glass, where
appropriate.

Check Device Manager and tell us what it says
(or doesn't say) when the drive is inserted.

Thanks for thinking about this issue. It is not the
connectors ... that I can tell. I have power to the drive
and it spins and whirls, etc. The Device Manager indicates
a beautiful yellow "!" and after deleting and reinstalling
I end up with the "!" back again.

I know its not working but don't know if it is the
hardware or the software? The indication in the properties
tab of the device manager indicates that there could be
something wrong in the 'registry' ... but what or is
something in the CD drive causing the problem.

Just cause the motors run does NOT mean there's not
a bent pin on the DATA contacts of the connector...

You need to tell us what Device Manager says under the
General tab for the drive, in the Device Status box...

While there, check the other tabbed dialogs for weirdness...
