CD drive shows every disc as an Audio CD

Would anyone know why my laptops CD drive suddenly started showing every
disc inserted as an Audio CD?

My mate had been using it for a couple of days, when i went to his house to
see it I had to put the Firewal and Virus software back online (dunno why it
was off), i thought the machine may be bugged so i thought id reinstall it
using the OS reinstall disc that came with it, i put it in, Audio CD comes
up, even if i click explore it has 1 audio track, any attempt to activate it
brings up WMP and it stalls for about 3-4 mins..

the discs work fine in my other machine.. I am at a loss here

Drive needs a clean. Open the CD tray and give the lense a quick wipe
with a dry cotton bud.

after that remove it from the device manager and let windows reinstall it.
