CD Drive Randomly Opening

Hello everyone. I bought a Compaq Presario 6000 about
a year ago, and just recently my CD-RW drive has decided
to randomly start opening. I have done multiple virus
scans on my machine and they are all coming up with
nothing. It's a Samsung CD-RW SW-240B--the same drive
that came with the machine. If anyone knows what the
problem might be, feel free to e-mail me a response since
I'm not sure how often I can check this newsgroup.
Thanks!

Hi,

Check for spywares, try download Adaware 6.0 from lavasoftusa.com.
After installed Adaware, update the definitions and then perform a full system scan.

Matt,

There are only two reasons for this to occur. One is a virus, which somehow
activates the "eject" routine for the drive..(you can right click the drive
and choose eject..you dont have to press the eject button)

The other is mechanical failure, which will occur randomly. To check if this
is due to mechanincal failure, just press the appropriate key for entering
the BIOS (at the red Compaq logo, when you power the system on, or restart
it)
Just leave your system on, in the BIOS setup menu, and check if the drive
ejects randomly). You can also boot the system using a ME / 98 startup
floppy disk, and leave it on at the A: prompt, if you are not comfortable
leaving the system on with the BIOS setup screen open.

If the second condition is true..time to get the drive checked.

Best of luck,

Prasad
