CD Drive disappears

I have 3 users who occasionally "lose" their CD drives. This usually
happens after a regular audio CD (not burned) is inserted into the drive.
The CD does not auto-play and when the users go into Windows Explorer no D
drive is present. If they try to manually browse to the D drive they get a
message about the drive not being found. They must reboot the computer in
order for the CD drive to appear. This does not happen every time an audio
CD is inserted - the same audio CD may work one time and not the next and
there are several different audio CDs that have generated this problem, so I
don't think it's the audio CD itself.

All 3 users are running Windows XP with SP1. The drives are all plain
CD-ROM drives, no other CD drives are installed on the system. The systems
are all Gateways, but 3 different models/motherboards. All 3 users are
connected to a network, with mapped drives to shared drives on a server
(Windows 2000 server).

I've already tried the following registry edit, but all 3 were already set
this way.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry
Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

1.. Click Start, and then click Run.
2.. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3.. Locate the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/Curretcontrolset/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce
-bfc1-08002be10318}

4.. On the File menu, click Export.
5.. In the File name box, type savedkey, and then click Save.
6.. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters, and then click Delete
on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
NOTE: If this data type is missing, continue to the next method.
7.. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters, and then click Delete
on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
8.. Quit the Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Any suggestions?
