cd drawer won't open

here is my frustrating problem. when i push the button
under the cd drawer it will not open. I know how to open
it with the paper clip in the hole trick, but I don't
want to be doing that every time. It is still not
working after re-boot and device manger says everything
is o.k.
i remember there was a fix for this, but of course I
can't find it anywhere!
anyone have any suggestions?

Device manager will not inform you of a hardware problem if the drive is
mechanically malfunctioning! Does the drive work if you install a CD. If it
is, the opening mechanism is broken and it is time for a new drive.

Mine does if right after I install roxio ez cd creator 5 and haven't applied
the update. Make sure the cdrom doesn't have any adaptec or other aspi
drivers installed unless it is a scsi cd drive. You can also try starting in
safe mode and remove ide drivers and then reinstall.
