CD Creator 4 compatibility

A

Al

I just upgraded from Windows ME to Windows XP and my
Adaptec CD Creator 4 software will not work. I
reinstalled the Creator software, but it still will not
work. What can I do?

D

David H. Lipman

Replace it with Roxio EZ CD Creator v5.3 or v6.x

Adaptec EZ CD Creator v4.x is NOT compatible with WinXP.

You need to spend a few dollars and get at least the basic
version 5 (about $10-20 on-line, find at
www.pricewatch.com ). When you get that you need to go to
www.roxio.com and download the update to version 5.3.5 for
it to be XP compatible. You can find version 6 also, it is
compatible. Most brick and mortar store only carry the full
platinum versions at about $100.00

Get a new version that is compatible with Windows XP. It is a known fact
that CD Creator 4.0 is not!

It is not completely compatible, but you can get it to work. You need to
uninstall, then do a custom install choosing NOT to install Take Two or
Direct CD. Then before rebooting, apply the latest updates availailable for
Ver 4 from the Roxio web site. After the updates are applied, you can then
reboot. You will not be able to install Take Two or Direct CD. If you need
packet writing capability, you should upgrade to version 6 as version 5
still has problems with Direct CD.

Please get your Adaptec/Roxio EZ CD Creator facts in order...

V4.xx is completely incompatible with WinXP as development stopped before WinXP existed.

V5.x will work but only if its is patched to to bring it to v5.3.5

I quote..."
"This web update is designed to update English versions of Easy CD Creator Basic 5.x.x to

fixes and adds new drive support, including support for DVD -R/RW and DVD +R/RW. This update
will install Windows XP specific drivers and make the necessary registry entries to allow
Easy CD Creator to operate correctly in Windows XP."

Really? Then how come I can install it without Take Two and Direct CD apply
the latest updates before rebooting and it works just fine. Sorry, don't
believe everything you read from a manufacturer that wants to sell you the
latest versions. I don't care what it says on the web site, it works without
the two above mentioned features installed. In my original reply, I stated
it was not completely compatible but would work with a custom install. So
you can add my facts to the ones you found on the Roxio web site.

As an computer specialist that is great. YOU can do it. That doesn't mean that the vast
majority of users can do it. The people who post here are mostly novices and clueless. It
is not a good idea to give them a non supported Gerri rig. There could be negative
ramifications down the road and there is always the "Chaos and Complex Systems" in a
computing platform factor to contend with.

Yes it does. But as far as I am concerned, the biggest plus of CD Creator IS
"Direct CD". Without it, it is a crippled program!

David,
It is a custom install with an update applied, nothing gerri rigged about
it. It is a very straight forward install option. You tell the setup when
asked what to install and what not to install. Simple straight forward
custom install. Nothing complicated about it. Run the install, apply the
update before rebooting, that is it.
If someone needs to copy a CD or burn an ISO, create a music CD and can't or
doesn't want to spend the money for a new version it will fill their needs
just fine and will not create chaos unless they install with Take Two or
Direct CD. I ran it that way all through the XP beta before Roxio came out
with 5 and 6. It works, with reduced functionality, but certainly with more
features than the native XP burning application.

I ordered a OEM version 5 CD from a dealer in Texas, updated
on-line to basic 5.3.5 as soon as I installed and before
even trying to use 5.1. I've never had a problem with 5.3.5

If I can afford to buy a DVD burner, I will buy the full
fancy version 6.

I on the other hand (and I also used Easy CD 4.05 on its own in XP
quite successfully), find I am now hardly ever using a packet written
CD. If there is a lot of data, CD-R are now so cheap, I use and throw;
for small amounts I use a USB flash 'pen drive'

A point to people who have had Easy CD and its other bits installed:
uninstalling is liable to leave registry references orphaned, which can
even result in the drive vanishing. To tidy up, I have a registry
patch file, cdgone.reg, from www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract
it, r-click on it and merge it into the registry

I know. I'm using version 6 now!
