cd burning issue

Sounds like, if you were having no problems to begin with, that it just
might be a cd/dvd failure. Try with different software first, there's loads
of free cd burning apps you can try. If they all fail, then it might be the
hardware.

Have you looked in device manager to see if the cd/dvd are found. My
daughter had this problem that the device was loading the drivers but unable
to 'find' the device.

I got this answer, tried it and it worked ok
Have you tried deleting upper and lower filters for the device. This page
describes exactly what to do

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/EN-US/

You can also try;
Locate the cdrom.inf file and "right" click on it, chose install and reboot.
If you have SP2 installed the latest version will be in;
C:\WINDOWS\Servicepackfiles\i386

I found the answer on this page.

Check reply from 'triton'

You will have to set Windows to show hidden files

Thanks to you both, but my problem is not that I can't use the drive or the
cd/dvd discs, only that the XP 'file manager' does not see discs that are
not already formatted as data discs until after they have first been 'looked
at' by browsing form a dvd writing/playing programme. I have tried
uninstalling, restarting and then reinstalling and starting again, and the
hardware appear fine in the device manager: it just does not seem to be seen
by Explorer until it is found by a media programme.

Cheers for the response none the less,

S
