Last night I downloaded and installed Windows Media
Player 10 for Windows XP Pro. It is not recognizing my CD
burner. I have a Plextor PX-W1610A 16/10/40A. Is there a
way to fix this problem? I have another burner software
on my computer that still recognizes my burner, therefore
I know the drivers are okay. I also looked in the Device
Manager and it was there too. I tried to go back and do a
restore point on my computer to see if that would fix the
problem, but it did not. Maybe there is a patch or a
simple fix that I am overlooking.

Thanks.

Hi Bryant,

You may need a firmware update for the unit.

Installing other burner software is liable to turn off the XP inbuilt
burning (they often conflict) and that is what is used by WMP.

You can turn it back on in My Computer, right click the drive,
Properties and check the Enable box on the Recording page. But if you
do so, first disable InCD; Direct CD (now Drag to disk) or DLA if you
have those installed. Or burn audio disks with the other package

Alex, you are partially correct. WMP 9 and newer do use the default builtin XP burner (version 8 would ONLY use the builtin flavor). But, version 9+ can have the settings change to use the 3rd party software to burn through WMP. If the 3rd party software (i.e., I have Nero) has the plugin, it will use that software's plugin to do the burning. WMP (iam fairly sure) will default to the 3rd party if it is installed, and automatically disable the XP builtin.
