CD Autorun

Apparently the autorun feature of my CD-ROM drive has become disabled. How can I enable it?

1. Open XP's "Help and Support" program.
2. In the Search box type: AUTOPLAY , and hit enter.
3. Next, click on "Change how your computer handles multimedia content".

Carey, thanks for your help. I can see I didn't clearly
state my problem. I had already done what you
prescribe. Let me try to describe my problem better.
For a long time after I first got this computer, when I
would insert a software CD, the screen would
automatically launch into the install program for the
software. At some point it stopped doing that. So I
opened My Computer. Under Devices with Removable Storage,
I right-clicked the CD-ROM drive, and then clicked
Properties. On the AutoPlay tab, I clicked the multimedia
content type you wanted to change. I changed them all,
but that didn't help. It's not multimedia I'm talking
about. I have a software CD that I insert, but nothing
happens. The documentation that came with the software
says, "If you haven't disabled the autorun feature for
your CD-ROM drive, the Autorun.exe program will
automatically be executed once you insert the program
CD." So, was I on the wrong track when I changed how the
computer handled multimedia? It didn't work.

become disabled. How can I enable it?
enabled by the BIOS. For instance, Most Dell manufactured computers are
configured to boot (start) from: 1. Floppy Drive., 2. CD-ROM Drive, 3. Hard
Drive. All that means is that it looks for a file to boot from in that
sequence. I do not know your machine but go to this site which will tell you
how to access the BIOS in most computers:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm. Be careful what you
do in the BIOS!! Have to leave now or I would tell you what exact setting to
change. Will be back tomorrow if you can wait. To attempt an answer, would
need to know the make and model of your machine.

Brad, Carey,

I've got the same thing going with a Dell Inspiron 8100
laptop with my visiting brother in law. It used to auto
start DVDs and one day just didn't do it anymore. Can
still use any number of programs to view the movie by
double clicking the icon, but will not auto play. Won't
auto start games or other CDs either.

I've been out to the updates, and brought it all the way
up from service pack 1 to current. No change in the
symptom. Also had a friend at work who stepped XP
through Control Panel, System, Hardware Tab, Device
Manager, select the DVD, right click, properties, and
nothing out there to turn on or off auto start functions
for the CD drive.

Your help greatly appreciated...

Thanks

Hi Guys
I had a laptop for xmas with XP Home on. I found that it didn't Autorun my
CDs. Was sent to the Registry to check that it had the right settings. It
did. I went down the Media route and everything has been set up there. Now
the position at the moment is that sometimes it Autoruns and sometimes it
doesn't. There appears to be no logic as to why it works sometimes and not
others. On one of the other Newsgroups I was advised to download the
following and it should restore the correct settings in XP. I haven't been
able to do it yet as I have only got access to the internet at the moment
from my desktop. Below is the link, give it a go and see if it sorts you
out okay. Let me know, I'd be interested to see if it works.

There is a file here that will help, copy it to your system and run it. It
resets the autoplay defaults.

I actually ended up here because I am a CD-Rom issue. Both the DVD and CD do not run anything, and show an exclamation point in the Device Manager. How can I reinstall it with the Installation CD if it does not read a CD. I have Windows X/P system. Can anyone help? Thanks.
