I am running xp Home but either through a virus or something the cd and dvd
drives are now not working. Uninstall the drivers and letting windows find
them does not solve it. Is there a way to solve this without reformatting?

Thanks,

Mark

It is possible that there were drivers associated with CD burning that
have gone AWOL, leaving entries in the registry. When startup does not
find them it will disable the drives. To tidy up, get a registry patch
file, cdgone.reg, from www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract it,
r-click on it and merge it into the registry

You will then need to reinstall any burning software that you *do* use.
