Categorize question inbox email on Outlook 2007 TR2

In my Inbox I use “Category†feature to assign email I received to a
particular category.

Then I hit Reply to reply to this email and after I sent it the reply in
Sent Items does not belong to any category

So my question is whether this is by design or bug and whether there is an
option (I went through all of them and couldn’t find it) that allows me to
keep category of the message I am replying to.

Also I noticed the Category ribbon button is not available in the email
compose view.

I rely on categories in my email organization and this is a big issue for me!

I think it's by design, since you might have a category named "Stupid Boss Stuff" that you wouldn't necessarily want to leak out.

When composing a message with Word as the email editor, click the Options button to set categories and other options.

This was however the default behaviour in Outlook 2003 and previous versions.

This way if I categorize incoming message, my outgoing message which is a
reply to the original message is also tagged with the same categories. So
when I later do a search for a particular category it will find both original
message in Inbox and the reply in Sent Items.

With the new default behavior the search for a particular category will not
return replies.

If default behavior changed, there at least should be option to change it
back to the way it was in earlier version for people who consciously choose
to do so.

My entire Outlook organization is based on Categories and the change in
behavior (or inability to set it back to how it was done previously) is a
serious gap in switching to Outlook 2007.

Any comments?

Thanks

Does it make any difference if you turn off the rule to strip categories on outgoing messages?

It makes no difference. I deleted that rule - now I do not have any rules and
still the same behaviour. Also I have applied Technical Refresh for Beta 2
and still the same.

I found a couple of interesting options poking around in the Outlk12.adm administrative template for the group policy editor. Add this registry value and let us know what happens. As always, back up your registry first.

KEY: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Preferences
Value name: SendPersonalCategories
Value type: DWORD
Value data: 1
