Catching An "Improper Shutdown" Window

Something isn't shutting down properly when I turn off my computer. Just
before it shuts off a window pops up with a dull note (sound) but the screen
turns off before I can read it. When I check the Error log, I find nothing.
I Really don't know where to begin.

I have had a System32 Folder pop up at start up for some time (months). I
found the MS article that deals with it but it involves editing the
registry. I need some instruction on backing up my system before I go there
so I have a little reading to do. In any event, I don't think this System32
Folder has any bearing on the window that pops up just before shutting down.
It's as though another program is still running when the system shuts down.

I'd like to get a plan for resolving the issue ... or at least finding out
what the window says.
