Catastrophic MAPI Error

Hi,

My computer is a Dell with XP and all updates. About a
month ago I installed Norton AntiSpam. Then I started
getting a "Catastrophic MAPI Error" message. I removed
the Norton AntiSpam. Shortly after that I was not able
to get online using cable. Bought a new modem. Was able
to get online with cable until a couple of days ago.

All lights on the modem come on except the "Online"
light. The light does not come if the modem is connected
through the ethernet card or the USB port. All
connections are okay. Comcast said they sent a signal
and the modem and connection appears to be okay yet the
computer will not go online using cable. Even a System
Restore did not help.

That leads me to believe that some files in XP may have
been damaged when the Norton AntiSpam was installed.
However, I don't know which files or how to replace
them. I really do not want to have to reinstall
everything on the hard drive.

Does anybody know what causes this and how to fix it?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ed

A lot of variables here to troubleshoot. First, you BOUGHT a cable modem?
Your ISP did not give you one? Are you sure that brand of modem is
compatible with your ISP? You might try replacing the cable modem, and see
if that works.

I would not think that a MAPI error would disable ALL Internet activity. I
could understand a MAPI error causing problems getting email and newsgroup
messages. I am not sure about Norton AntiSpam, but I installed Norton
Internet Security 2004 on a SP2 system recently. I installed the program
under my profile/logon name, which has admin rights. When I ran the updates
to Internet Security (several times) one of the updates blocked all
Internet/network activity. I had to actually logon to that computer with
the Administrator logon and run the LiveUpdate for Norton Internet Security
again. It then installed an update that the program needed to work properly
with SP2. You might try to logon to the Administrator logon and see if you
have Internet activity in that profile.

One last thing that I would look at is the Windows firewall. You might try
disabling it on your network connections. (Personal opinion here) I don't
care for the Windows firewall, even the new SP2 version! (sorry Microsoft)

I don't know if any of this helps, but at least it is a few things to
consider. Good luck.
