Catalysy 3.10 drivers under win98se for 9800xt.

r.sullivan

I'm upgrading my computer to one with new parts, and this is what I'm
getting:
MSI Neo fis2r Socket 754 Motherboard.
Athlon64 3200+
ASUS Radeon 9800xt
pc3200 RAM

Currently I run win98se for an operation system and I am wondering if I
can use win98 with the catalyst 3.10 drivers for my 9800xt. I was reading
the release notes for these drivers on ATI's webpage, and it says that
win98se supports this card and these drivers through the windows ME drivers.

Has anyone tried using windows98se with a new Radeon card and these catalyst
3.10 drivers? If so, does it work well and is there any decreased
performanced.
Thanks,
~Sullivan

Why not? Why support Microshaft's latest BS OS? Why pay into their bullshit?
Why doesn't everyone use Linux instead of the crap OS's Microshaft puts out?

To answer the poster's original question though I'm using 98SE and the Cat
3.10's on an Abit NF7-S v2.0 w/a 9800 Pro. No problems.
Why use win98 on such a modern system?

It will not be a problem...

But I will share some important info with you.

I have recently went from Win98 to WinXP-Pro... Windows98 driver
support is SO crappy... and yes I don't trust WinXP worth shit.
Luckily the company corp. version helps on some issues. Because I
sure wouldn't want a RETAIL version on my computer.

My Windows setup was falling apart with drivers for the motherboard
(Both VIA with KT400 and Nforce) - but the ATI driver for Win98 seemed
good...

But with Windows2000/XP - perhaps more with WinXP, you'll gain about
another 20% performance out of your CPU. I've compared it myself.
An AMD XP2200 was faster than my OC AMD2500 with Win98. I put both
Win98 & XP on the AMD2200 and the tests showed improvements with
WinXP.

Yes - WinME drivers work for Win98 - CAT drivers.

Why use win98 on such a modern system?

Because WinXP is not a trusth worthy OS. Its activation issues,
privacy issues and other shit is a problem.

I mean, shit - just USING Windows Explorer and the system want to
treat that tool like a SERVER. Internet access required 3 OTHER
aspects of WinXP to have NET access for the internet to work.

Try UNINSTALLING POS M$ Messenger or Outlook express...

BS M$ only lets you "hide" them... never mind virus/trojans still have
access to these. With some work on the registry and removing some
key files - you can KILL them.

When XP craters - it craters VERY badly. It sucks up lots of space -
about 2GB... The REGISTRY itself is about 25 bloody megabytes!!

WinXP is more stable, is faster with todays CPUs... but M$ ****ed it
up with their World Domination plans.

PS, to ATHURA - if you install XP, especially when you need more than
512mb - get Agent Ransack to replace XP's crappy as FILE SEARCH...
they took the simple and powerful FIND tool and now it hits the
internet every time you do a Seach on your own system - and ITs a
stupid wizard now!

http://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack

This program is free... there is a more powerful version, not free.
But its 100times BETTER than XP's search.

Also, you may want to disable M$ MediaPlayer big time... go to:
C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player

And run: mplayer2.exe Go to its settings and make it your default
player... much faster and better than that bullshit MediaPlayer 7~9.
Version 6 is JUST a player (Disable its DRM crap still)... if you go
into its settings, you can make the control bar show up in FULL
screen... love how it pauses.

Everyone deserves to do what they like or prefer. But, I must ask, is that
$300 USD? or marks. It can be had for less than $100USD, here, in the
states.

Ever heard of dual booting? Why waste time tweaking Xp's compatibility mode
to get old games working when they work streight out off the box on win98se?
Dual booting gives you the best of both worlds as far as I can see.

I can't even install Windows 98 SE or Windows ME on my current machine. It
hangs during installation. It appears to have to do with the 1.5GB of RAM I
have installed, but I'm not sure.

Sorry I didnt know its came down that much in price $129 for home or $209
for pro. Canada money sucks. I still prefer win 98 I still like playing the
older dos games and apparantly they wont run on xp.

And Win98 is?

Trust worthy and secure are two different things... Win98 is more
trustable than XP... But XP is less secure than Win98 because it
loves to broadcast to the world to attack.

Look at his EMAIL/server address... berlin.de = hint.

And $100 is an UPGRADE version, Home edition. A gamer, especially one
that goes to LAN PARTIES would need XP-PRO, and if he built his OWN PC
- it retails for $300 US Dollars Retail...

Thats not cheap. SUSE Linux is $40 and includes a lot more for your
money... but of course has the standard problems of Linux.

Windows98 has a problem with more that 500mb of memory, but their are OS
settings which control this. You'd have to install with less than 500mb in
the first place.

Windows 98 will not support more than 512MB Ram. Either remove the extra ram
or try a diffent OS.

The problem is that the default cache settings trigger a bug when more than
512mb is installed. You can change the default settings AFTER it's installed
to ignore the extra memory. Reducing the memory is only required during the
installation process.

Some people state currency in USD, even though they are not in the US. I
can read and know that he is in Europe.

I paid $200 for full retail version of Pro, in June of 2002. Here is an OEM
version, for $139:

AND, there's absolutely nothing wrong with upgrade versions. The only
difference is having to verify that the person owned a qualifying product
for the upgrade. Clean install can be done.
