CatalogDB error while installing patches

I have KB896424 installed from windows update but something happened and I
reinstalled it. After that, I now can't install new patches.
I looked in /windows/C/WINDOWS/system32/catroot2/dberr.txt
I find over 30 instances of this error
CatalogDB: 4:14:47 PM 2/9/2006: File #1 at line #3859 encountered error
0xfffffbfe

I did net stop cryptsvc and renamed the catroot2 folder and rebooted but I
still get the same error when I try to install a patch and it won't install
BTW, I have a legal copy of windows so this is not an issue.
I tried system restore but the error remained even after a succesfull system
restore operation.

Can somebody smart please heelp so I can keep using windows?
I would really hate to have to find an alternative to windows.
