I see a lot of folks recommend image programs for back up. Usually it's
Acronis, Ghost, or Terabyte. I recently set up a back up system for a small
business using Casper XP. The system had to be as easy to use as possible for
totally non technical types. I put a drive rack in each machine and once a
week all the machines are totally imaged to a single hard drive which is then
stored in a safe place. If any system in the office suffers drive failure
they can immediately install and run right off the back up drive while
waiting to install a new drive. If it is just an OS failure they just pop the
backup drive in, boot, and restore the OS. I automated the whole back up
process for them so all they must do is insert the back up drive and click an
icon on the desk top and bing, bang, boom; it's a done deal. The back up
process also makes a back up image of there documents to a backup partition
on their internal hdd. Simple daily data backups are done to other media. It
really works sweet, no boot disks or the like. I think its a nice solution
for a small serverless environment.
