Cases, Harddisks, Internal, External ?

Hi,

I am looking for a case which can mount the following items:

4x Sata II harddisks:

Hitachi Desktstar 7K500 500 GB, 7.200 rpm, 16 MB, SATA II (HDS725050KLA360 )

1x IDE optical drive:

CD/DVD Rewriter: Plextor PX-740A 16 x, 4 x, 16 x, White, Retail

And optionally

2x IDE harddisks:

IBM/Hitachi Deskstar 14 GXP
Hitachi Deskstar 7K250

When I look at case descriptions I find it rather confusing:

"
Dimensions: Height: 415 mm Width: 200 mm Depth: 480 mm Free space for
drives: 4 x 5,25" external (1 x tilting door) 2 x 3,5" external 4 x 3,5"
internal Connections front panel: 2 x USB 1 x audio in 1 x audio out Power
supply: ...
"

It mensions external ??? and internal stuff ???

Why do they call 5.25 external ? this seems the drive bays for the optical
stuff ?

Hmm ok I get it, the harddisk are internal... and the diskdrives are again
external.. hmm ok.

So I would need to look for:

1 external 5.25 inch bays for the optical drive ?
4 internal 3.5 inch bays for the sata drives ?

plus another
2 internal 3.5 inch bays for the ide drives ?

plus
1 external 3.5 inch bay for the floppy disk drive ;) ?

So that's

2 external 5.25 inch bay (one extra just in case ;) )
6 internal 3.5 inch bay
1 external 3.5 inch bay

9 bays at least.

Bye,
Skybuck.

It may be more than you need, but take a look at the Coolermaster
Stacker: it is a big case with room for 11 5,25 inch devices, or even
more 3,5 inch hard drives. It also has room for 120 mm fans that can
blow air directly onto the drives.

Bye,

I have an older version of this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811182545

It has 8 5.25 bays, and 1 3.5 bay. The bottom two 5.25 bays can be
taken up by a three 3.5 drive frame.

The smallest case that will meet those specs on Newegg is the APEX
TX-346 (TM not TX?), which is a conventional 16" deep, 14" high, 7"
wide microtower ATX case. What's unconventional is the provision for
6 internal 3.5" drives in this case.

It doesn't have to be small. I rather have lot's of room too easy place
things in it and have a good airflow and also for expansion.

Yeah this case does look nice.

However I wonder how much space there would be between the harddisks ???

(I want at least 1 centimeter of space between them ;))

One last drawback is the height itself. Placing the pc on the table might
not be an option since it could vibrate too much so I would end up having to
place it on the ground. I think it's better to then have the fan as high as
possible to prevent dust from being sucked in.

Also I'll probably need a 550 watt or maybe even 600 watt power supply ;)

I have looked at some cases... Mostly only those available at a certain
(dutch) website.

So far I like your selected case.

1. The power supply is up there which is good.
2. It has an extra fan to suck out hot air (or does it blow in cool air ?
;))
3. It's small which makes it easy to carry and move around, though I dont
plan on moving it much.
4. It has a little opening in the front allowing air in (?).
5. It can mount one or two floppy drive bays.
6. It only has room for two bays. I need one for the dvd rewriter and one
possible for a guru panel lol ;)

7. Hopefully the power box/supply can be replaced ???

The question is if a normal motherboard will fit in it ?

For example the A-Bit AN8 Sli Fatality ?

(I think not since Fatality is format ATX and your selected case is format
Micro ATX ? )

Also heat build is a little concern since everything is so packed together,
though maybe it won't be much of a problem
thanks to that one fan... or maybe it will...

Bye,
Skybuck.
