cascaded windows won't stop coming up in start up

There is probably a very simple solution to this problem, but I have yet to
find it. I let my roommate borrow my computer and when I started it back up,
a whole folder of files came up just one by one (about 5 of them). I tried
closing them, then restarting my computer, but it doesn't work. They still
keep coming back up. It's very annoying and it slows down my computer when
it's booting up.

Also, is there a way for some applications to not boot up when the computer
starts? I feel like I'm constantly clicking Exit right when the icon comes
up on the task bar near the clock.

If you can only answer the first question, please do because it is very
obnoxious to have all these windows cascade right before my eyes!

Thanks in advance

try "startupcpl" hrom here:

http://www.mlin.net/

it apps an icon to your cntrl panel that lets you block many apps from
funning at startup. if you then find your comp not responding the way you
like, simply go back and recheck the items you stopped till fixed.
ther's also "msconfig.exe" from the "run" panel, but unless you know what
you're doing, this is a very easy way to create an un-bootable system,
requiring complete format and re-install of os.

hope this helps

Also check in the startup folder under programs to see if your friend has put
a file in there and also run msconfig to see what is in your startup

The other guys don't mention it but, if you're running XP, you can easily
stop programs from loading during the boot process. Here's how:
As the GUI (Windows Logo) comes up, hold down the CTRL key until the destip
view stabilizes (about 3 minutes max). You can then manually load the
programs you want. If the problem still exists, the loaded program(s)
responsible for this may be getting pre-loaded.
I've had this type of problem show up when opening certain email messages
from trusted contacts only, in may case, in excess of 60 windows would open.
My only solution was to make sure I didn't re-open THAT message.
