Boot up difficulties

Hello,
When I boot up, the computer gets as far as the Windows screen with the blue
squares running along the central bar.These keep running with occasional
hesitation until they stop but the computer does not boot. I switch off the
computer and switch it on again. An option comes to try various things
including booting from the last setting which worked. I go for this and it
starts up.
This happens every time I try to reboot the computer and is most annoying.
Once started, the computer works perfectly.
I should be very grateful if anyone can help.

Thanks Mark for your prompt and helpful post.
Miraculously, my computer seems to be working properly now, all of a sudden
but I will bear in mind your helpful link in case the problem starts again.
