I have refilled my HP 56 cartridge for my Photosmart 7660 printer but I do
not get a new reading on the ink level monitor. Can anyone explain why?

If it is like some of the other HP printers you
have to cycle through 2 other cartridges or tape
the appropriate contacts, so that if forgets the
cartridge you refilled. Another solution that
might work is plug in the printer (give it power),
take the cartridge out, unplug the printer for a
couple of minutes (no power connection), insert
the cartridge, and plug in the printer. That may
wipe the memory of your cartridge ID.

I don't know specifically about the 56 cartridge,
but it may work.

The printer that uses that cartridge remembers the Serial No of the
last 2 cartridges installed.
To reset the ink level you need to cycle thru 3 different cartridges,
old ones will do. Just install one cartridge and wait for it to be
recognised and try to print a calibration page. If you use old
cartridges it doesn't matter if nothing prints the cartridges are dead
anyway. then do the same with another old cartridge.
After that one is recognised put the refilled cartridge back in and it
should show it as full.
There is a way to do it by covering different points on the cartridge
but I don't know what they are. I use the 3 cartridge method which is
easier

The contacts to tape over after a refill to reset the 56 ink level indicator
are:-

1st --------Top contact of the second column from the left.
2nd---------Top contact of the second column from the right.
3rd..............none.

It usually works with just putting the cartridge in each time and shutting
the lid for 5 seconds between swaps. If you have any problems then let the
printer print a calibration page between each swap.
