cardbus ieee 1394 can operate but will not capture video

I bought a smartdisk cardbus ieee1394 firewire to capture video from
canon CXI to a toshiba A20 laptop (P4 2,53 Mhz). I can operate the
camera for playing, rewind, forward,... but if I try to capture, the
software freeze. I tried windows movie maker, premiere pro and ulead
video studio... no luck.
I'm using WinXP sp1, everything uptodate.

any idea?

TIA

I am having the same problem. I have a Sony DCR-TRV27
camcorder that I can operate via firewire (play, rewind,
etc.), but whenever I try and capture video I get an error
(independent of what program is attempting the capture).
I am using Windows XP professional SP1 (OEM). Everything
is up to date with Windows Updates.

My guess is that something is interfering with the IEEE
1394 capture (whether that be another program,
(firewall?), the audio/videos codecs from DirectX, or the
camcorder & card drivers I don't know). My IEEE 1394 port
comes from a Texas Instruments chip built into my
motherboard. All appears to function normally.

Any help in figuring out what is causing the problem ...
I'd appreciated it.

Since the original posting is not showing on my PC, I have no idea what you
have done so far......

I am presuming:

You installed the firewire card in your PC.

Did XP correctly detect and install drivers for said card?
Did Device Manager show it as working correctly?
What are you connecting to it..... again, I have to presume.... a digital
camcorder?
What is the make and model of the camcorder?
Is it turned ON and in VCR mode?

I have a very similar problem. It is obvious to me that Microsoft needs to take care of this issue. The only responses I have seen officially are that certain cameras (some panasonics) and older 1394 controllers have issues that were supposed to be addressed in SR1 for XP. In my case, my Sony DCR-TRV530 worked just fine with my NEC OHCI Compliant IEEEE 1394 Host Controller. I have sucessfully captured vidieo and controlled all my cameras functions using Pinnacle Studio 8 (which uses the standard MS WIndows capture function). I left the camera alone to capture a long lecture video (45 min) when I returned the capture had stopped. The camera was battery powered, I don't know if it shut off, but the entire lecture was captured. Since then I cannot get XP to recognize my camera. Uninstalling the 1394 controller and reinstalling it doesn't work. It installs a network protocol but not a Sony camcorder which it recognized previously by brand

If anyone haa a clue on this one, you would be helping a good number of people by posting any info you have

Most camcorders won't let you capture from them UNLESS the are on AC power.
Don't blame MS yet again for a feature included by the camcorder
manufacturer's BY DESIGN.

Hi ther
I have a similar problem. I have a SONY DV TRV12E and my PC(XP) wont recognize it. It works fine with the USB connection but not trough firewire. I have tried everything. An old JVC camera works fine on the computer and my SONY works fine on an old computer(ME)!!! but not with XP. Strange, right? It seems as if My PC needs driver to work through firewire. Really hope you can help
