Anybody know of a freeware program to manage mine and the kids cars ie.
service records, mot's etc.

CarCompanion comes to mind:

Java based, so should run on just about any platform that supports
Java. No guarantee that it's exactly what you've been looking for - but
since it's open source you a) have the chance to test it befor you
dismiss it and b) if you're firm with Java yourself can expand it to
match your requirements.

If Java is not your forte, and if tracking 3 vehicles is enough, try "3 for
free" version at http://www.kjon.com
I have used it for about 4 years with no complaint.
