Capturing to an .avi from a Sony MiniDV

I have tried capturing with my Sony TRV18, connected via a usb cable and when
i try to capture WMM only gives me the option to capture it as a .wmv file
and the .avi file option is greyed out. Do i need a capture card or a
different kind of connection? The computer is a 2.4 gihz with 256 Ram. thanks.
