Captured video is dark

I am using a Sony Handicam with MiniDV tapes. The video appears fine on the
camera playback as well as when played on a TV from the camera, however, when
captured from the camera it is much darker. I could edit and brighten but it
just isn't the same.

Any suggestions as to why this happens?

Did you capture as dv-avi?
This is the only option which captures as an exact copy of what is on the
tape.
Next, send back some of the dv-avi video to your camcorder tape and then
play this on the tv.
It should be identical.
If it is, it's not the captured file which is at fault but the settings of
the graphics card/monitor.
You then either need to spend time and money setting this up properly or
learn to edit knowing that the result will be lighter than what you see.
