Caps Lock Indicator?

Apple's OS X has a really neat feature whereby a little icon pops up in
the message box you're typing in if you're in All Caps. (One of the very
few innovative aspects of that OS!) I was wondering if this is possible
somehow with XP or if there was some program I might use to accomplish
this? I don't know how many hundreds of times I've been entering and
re-entering passwords that come up as a very informative **********. Of
course the smart thing would be to have the option to show the password
instead of those stars since many of us are working alone.

We know MS coded this function because the Log On menu includes
a CAPS LOCK detector.

This is avoidable if we keep passwords in a separate file, and toggle to
and from it, with key commands to Copy and Paste.

Well, lets see: If you have a standard desktop computer the keyboard will
have a Caps Lock light on it somewhere. Locate that and look at it before
you start typing your passwords. Laptops also may have the same light.
Every version of Windows from 2000 on (don't yet know about Win 7) have a
feature that will sound a tone when the caps lock key is pressed (on) and a
different tone when it is pressed (off) again. To activate on XP, Open
Control Panel, Accessibility Options, Keyboard, Toggle Keys. Ensure that
the PC beep is turned on and not muted in the sound system.

I am using a Microsoft Wireless Multimedia Keyboard 1.1 (to give you the
complete model name from the bottom) and it pops up an advisory message
whenever I toggle the Caps Lock key. Similar messages come up when I click
on the Mute button, which is an extra button provided on this keyboard
(along with buttons for My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, Mail, Web/Home
Messenger, and others.)

Maybe a keyboard like this would help you?
 
I am using a Microsoft Wireless Multimedia Keyboard 1.1 (to give you the
complete model name from the bottom) and it pops up an advisory message
whenever I toggle the Caps Lock key. Similar messages come up when I click
on the Mute button, which is an extra button provided on this keyboard
(along with buttons for My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, Mail, Web/Home
Messenger, and others.)

I have the same type keyboard. Besides the little onscreen popup it also
toggles a light on the keyboard/mouse receiver. Of course if you're not
looking at the screen or receiver as you type you may not notice it.

How do I enable this feature?

I may have never noticed it if it was there and I don't see it now.

I was just curious - I'll keep an eye out for it now.

I'm using a Microsoft 4000 Natural wired model but when I go into Control
Panel, Keyboard, I don't see any options there for this. Using XP Pro,
SP3.
I can't see the keyboard when I type so having a light on or off won't
help me. And even then its not nearly as good as seeing something on the
screen.

Sounds interesting but I just need to know if its on or be reminded that
it is indeed on. I know a lot of people disable the Caps Lock key
entirely but I find it very useful in many documents I create so that
ain't an option unfortunately. Wish it was. :)

You know I remember seeing Accessibility Options before but I can't
remember if its pre-XP or not. Can someone confirm please? I'm using XP
SP3 and I don't see it but I've customized a lot of the Start Menu stuff
so maybe I deleted it. I do see Keyboard but don't see anything in there
to help this situation. As in there is no "Toggle Keys".

It isn't on the start menu. Follow the instructions shown in my original
response. It is on the Keyboard tab once you get Accessibility Options open
from Control Panel. The third item down. You should see "Sticky keys,
Filter keys and Toggle keys." If not you are in the wrong place.

On Word 2007 the Caps lock indicator can be put in place but is not there by
default. To turn this on start Word, right click on the blank area of the
status bar (where it says page 1 of 1). You will see a large menu appear to
customize the status bar. Click the area to the left of Caps Lock to turn
on the check mark. Once turned on you will see the status of the Caps Lock
key on the status bar. The other item that should be turned on but isn't in
it's default status is the Insert/Overtype mode control. This is a
clickable item that turns on insert mode or when clicked again turns on the
overtype mode.

But will this indicator show up in a browser? (I think not, right?) I
need it for my browser since that's where I am typing passwords that I
cannot see (just a bunch of stars).

I assume that the messages popping up when I click on Caps Lock (or Mute)
are enabled somehow within the drivers for the keyboard. I didn't
reconfigure anything in Control Panel/Keyboard to start getting those
messages.

I don't know if you really want to spend money on a different keyboard to
get the onscreen notifications about Caps Lock being toggled. It might not
be worth the money to you. I'm just mentioning that my keyboard does what
you want in case it IS worth spending some money on it.

By the way, this may do more harm than good but you COULD try installing the
drivers for the Microsoft wireless keyboard on your computer and see if you
suddenly get the onscreen notifications when you click on Caps Lock. As I
said though, even if you get the onscreen notifications, this may cause new
problems with the keyboard itself if you use the drivers for a different
keyboard than the one you've actually got connected. Still, it would be easy
enough to reinstall the current drivers if using the Wireless drivers
causing problems for you.....
