Disabling Caps lock key?

M8RIX

Hello All,
A while back I was reading a post that mentioned a method to turn the caps
lock key into another shift key. I believe the method mentioned involved
tweaking the registry. For a guy like me with fat fingers, I think I would
like to be able to do that because I very seldom find a use for the caps
lock anyway. More often than not, I hit it in place of the left hand shift
key anyway. And I am frequently alerted that it is on when I go to key in a
password.
Can this be done easily and does anyone know how it is done?
TIA...................mARK n>

There are the programs, which can reassign the keys -- like KeyRemapper,
RemapKye, ZDKeyMap (http://net-baustelle.de/redwraith/UpP/dl_misc.htm )
KeyTweak ( http://webpages.charter.net/krumsick/KeyTweak_install.exe )
and so on.

But as far as I know, you can't reassign the keys on the fly
nevertheless: these programs change the same Registry setting, and in
any case either restart, or logoff/logon is needed after remapping.

Not a complete answer but this will warn you when the caps lock key is
pressed.

1. Open your PC's Control Panel and then Accessibility Options (In XP use
Classic View).

2. On the Keyboard tab , click the Use Toggle Keys checkbox.

3. Click OK.

Now you'll hear a sound when you use Caps Lock and also Num Lock and Scroll
Lock.

If you're a bit hard of hearing or need a visual warning for some other
reason, try this:

1. Repeat step one above.

2. In the Sound tab ckick to check the Use SoundSentry checkbox.

3. Click the Settings button and select Flash active window in the Warning
for windowed programs drop-down menu.

4. Click OK and you're done.

Now every time you hit Caps Lock or the other Lock keys, the currently
active window will flash at you.

BTW, I use the option:

To turn off CAPS LOCK: press the SHIFT key

Thanks bumtracks,

I looked at both of the resources that you pointed me to but I hesitate to
use them because they are both three years or more out of date.
The key described at annoyances .org does not exist on my machine and
johnhaller.com has not been updated since 2002. I will keep looking until I
find instructions that are more specific to my system (XP- Media center 2002
version SP2).
Thanks again for your interest and time. If I find what I am looking for I
will post back with the info for the benefit of others.
