Hi,

Running XP PRO SP2 on my notebook.

I encounter now a strange behaviour while inserting a CD.

This is really a strange new problem related to the SHELL HARDWARE DETECTION
SERVICE...While trying to browse the contents of a CD.

Using the explorer i am not able , now, to obtain/see the contents of any CD.

I never obtain an error, but no files are displayed even i try several
ejects and inserts with several different CDs. ( for example SP2)

It's not a hardware issue ! I already try with another drive and obtain the
same problem.

Using msconfig and selecting a boot without any services all is working fine
as expected.
I also found the culprit it seems to be the Shell Hardware Detection svc.

While trying to boot without the "SHELL HARDWARE DETECTION" service all is
working fine.

If booting with this service enable the problem always occurs.

When i try to view the contents of a CD-ROM in Windows Explorer, i can't see
the name of the CD-ROM in the left pane, and the folders are also not
displayed in the right pane or in another opened window.

explore function gives already nothing as open function too.

I found also another workaround but not really appreciated.

After inserting a CD-ROM, and launching the NERO StartSMART tool , using
explorer now the right pane display the folders from the first CD-ROM.

Any help will be very appreciated.

It's now a nightmare...and i really don't want to reinstall the whole XP
software.

Thanks a lot for any tips and help.

This problem should be resolved by the AutoFix tool from Microsoft

It may be a fouled up autoplay setting, so that the autoinsert
notification is being lost. Microsoft people have written an unofficial
fix up tool for Autoplay. Without great confidence, I suggest you try
it - it is not on a MSoft site, but can be downloaded from
Http://www.bigblackglasses.com/staff/downloads/autofix.exe

Hi,

I already launched Autofix.exe tool but problem stills present.
Really nightmare.

FWIW, I run w/o Shell HW DEtection Service running all the time, and have
no problem reading CD's or DVD's. Something else is afoul...

I started having this same exact problem as described. I honestly don't
know how long the problem has been there, probably a few months. Thus,
I have no idea what it was that caused it. But, the problem was as
follows: I would place a disc in my DVD burner, and I could not explore
the contents of the CD-rom, regardless of whether it was audio, data,
or DVD. Normally, when you put a data CD in, it would prompt to view
the contents of the disc. But I was getting nothing. As a side note, it
would work in my other drive in the same system, which was a plain old
CD-reader. However, in my main drive, ALL autoplay functionality would
work -- audio discs would start playing in media player, DVDs would
open up the DVD player, etc.. however, if I wanted to view the contents
of the CD-rom and open windows explorer, forget it! It would keep going
back to "My Computer". I tried every fix that has been mentioned in
these groups over the past two years, and nothing worked. (No, autofix
did not work either.) I never disabled Shell Hardware Detection, as I
didn't think that would be a good idea, and it didn't make sense to me
why that would be the culprit. To make a long story short, here's
exactly what I did:
1) Booted into Safe mode
2) Open "My Computer". On the icon on problem drive, right-click on
properties
3) Go to the "Recording" tab, click "Enable CD Recording on this
drive."
4) Click OK.

Test it out... put a data CD in the drive. For me, this fixed the
problem. How strange is that? So, I rebooted back into Windows
normally, and it still worked. I was able to disable recording on the
drive again, and it still works.

Now, I just want to know what caused the problem in the first place.
And, I wonder how long this will last....

Hope this helps someone else.
