Can't view or preview messages in Outlook 2000

Hello, I can't preview messages in Outlook 2000 v9.0. In
the preview pane I see instead:

"this item contains active content that cannot be
displayed in the preview pane. Open the item to read its
contents."

I see this no matter what message I want to preview.
Double clicking a message header has no effect: I can't
open it. These are normal messages, I had no trouble
viewing before. What could be the problem?
