can't view doc contents without opening the document

in the older programs, contents of a document could be seen in a small window
when going to "open file ". In XP only the icons, name of doc and date of
last use come up

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

My Computer open to that folder, View menu, View tab, Thumbnails
