Can't use link from my received e-mail...what?

John Arnold

So, everything was working fine.

I've got XP with SP2.

Use Outlook Express.

When I get e-mails that have links (www.something.etc; or "click here") and
I try to click on, all I get is the hand-cursor with a small little yellow
"x". I simply can't use a link in my received e-mail to access/go-to what
the link would usually send me to....

This is a new problem....

Any help to rectify will be much appreciated...

Cheers,
John

OE Tools>Options>Security>Download images>... (uncheck)

and/or

Tools>Options>Read>Read all message in plain text (uncheck)

Thank you for your notes.

However, my settings were already set as you described....so it must be
something else.

I have had SP2 for about a month....and only this morning did my e-mail
change to not allow me to click on the hyperlink and scoot to the designated
site/destination.

Hmmmmm...??

John

Thank you for the link (which, of course, doesn't work from my e-mail....I
have to copy-&-paste).

But, frankly, the info is WAY over my head.....I'm totally lost when
reading.

Again, nothing change from the SP2 installation of over a month ago until
this morning....when this problem cropped up.

Should I simply reinstall OE?

Thanks.

John

Hi PA Bear,

Thank you very much for your help.

Went to the sites, did all sorts of things (cleaned up cookies, etc) and if
the dang e-mail still doesn't let me use hyperlinks.

Another thing: I thought, hey John, why don't you simply do a System
Restore. Tried.....and tried and tried. Went back to dates that were
marked on the calendar as having Checkpoints...but alas, the System Restore
does not work on my computer. Yes, it's set to on (monitoring all drives),
there's enough hard disk space, etc. etc.

Egads!! What is going on with my computer (Oh, I also have run Norton
SystemsWorks 2005 fix-problems....and Norton Antivirus Scan).

Any help much appreciated.

John

Try disabling NAV's Script Blocking.

1. You click on a hyperlink and an IE window doesn't even open: See
http://www.oehelp.com/ielnk.aspx

2. You click on a hyperlink and an IE window opens but it doesn't load:

Re-register all DLLs listed in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679

If still no joy, did the problem begin after installing SP2 or other Windows
updates recently?

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity
(File>Identities>Add new identity) and see if links work now. Assuming all
is well, import messages from the old Identity before deleting it
(File>Identities>Manage Identities).

Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

THANKS PA Bear,

Well....I did the following:

1) Disabled NAV's Script Blocking.

2) Wend into Control Panel>Folder Options:URL: Hypertext Transfer Protocol
(also the same thing for "Hypertext Transfer Protocol with Privacy")

- checked path.
- checked field box #1, #2, and #4 to be sure that the coincided with
"Welcome to OEHelp.com/ielnk". Field #3 was blank, like it should be.

Bottom line: Still no joy!

I installed (upgraded) SP2 about 5-6 weeks ago, and everything was fine.
This event just happened.

So....I'll do everything else on your list.

Again, thanks for your continued help...

John

Kelly,

Thanks for the link.

I read quite a bit, and perhaps it's a malware problem.

So.....I started to do some work (run antivirus and spyware removal in safe
mode)....only to discover that I can't seem to get my Win XP to boot up in
safe mode. Whether I "shut down" or "restart"...when I hit F8, the only
thing that happens is the keyboard is disabled. WinXP loads up to the point
of the log-in screen, but then since I have no keyboard I shut the computer
down again.

Something serious has gotten into my system...

The other thing I noticed is that with System Restore ON, I cannot use it.
I try...going back to one point after another in the calendar, but after
System Restore runs, the final thing it says is that it couldn't do what it
had to do...and for me to try again. I have selected probably about 10
dates going back quite a ways...nothing works. Bizarre.

Oh well....I'll keep working at it.

And thanks for your help.
