Can't upgrade to SP2 or repair XP

We have a PC in our office which had been upgraded from Win 98 to XP SP1. I
am trying to upgrade it to SP2 but am receiving the message "The procedure
entry point PtInSect could not be located in the dynamic link library
USER32.dll". In addition, My Computer properties indicate that the OS is
Win 98 although it is clearly XP, which might indicate that the upgrade
from 98 to XP was botched. I tried to repair the XP SP1 installation by
booting from the CD but get the message that NTDLR is missing. Since I
can't boot with the CD, I can't repair the system. Can anyone suggest a
solution?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you will need to do a clean install, preferably with a
slipstreamed XP SP2. Back up your data, format the drive, install
Windows, etc. Here are links to help:
